Working quietly

The best event photographers are the ones nobody remembers seeing. That means shooting on prime lenses at a distance where possible, keeping flash on-camera and pointed away from the speaker's eyeline, moving in the interval and not through the applause, and never asking the venue to hold service for a photo. Ushers and the venue's AV team get briefed at the pre-event walk-through so they know where we will be during the important moments. On tightly-produced conferences we work in dark clothing and soft-soled shoes and stay off any camera platform that a speaker's own camera team is using.

Corporate conferences and multi-day rhythm

Corporate conferences across the CTICC, Century City Conference Centre, the Sandton Convention Centre and Emperors Palace need a different pace — we bring a second shooter, offload cards to a backup drive every two hours, and rotate through the plenary, breakouts and sponsor stands so the coverage feels complete. Multi-day events get a nightly cull and preview so the CMO can approve press images before the next morning starts. Awards nights and gala dinners are shot with two bodies plus a dedicated backstage angle so the trophy-collection moment always has a clean frame.
